As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures start to drop, it’s the perfect time to get out there on your mountain bike. But due to the changing conditions on the trails, you will want a more rugged setup than the one that you ride in the summertime. Fall mountain biking is all about wind-stopping jackets and warm wool to keep you warm.
Here are some of our favorite mountain biking gear that will keep you warm this fall!
Clothing
What you choose to wear when out on the trails this fall can have a big impact on your ride. Choose a base layer of merino wool that offers insulation but unmatched breathability. We recommend layering with wool tights as well as a wool shirt.
Next, choose a long-sleeved jersey jacket to keep you warm and offer breathability on long climbs up the trail. Rain showers are common in the fall especially at higher elevations, so pack a lightweight waterproof shell to layer over your clothing.
Finally, while some mountain bikers prefer to wear pants, a good quality mountain bike trail short layered over your base layer tights is recommended. This allows you ample mobility and is much more breathable compared to pants.
Backpack
You may forgo a backpack during the summer, but come autumn, it is an indispensable piece of gear for long mountain bike rides.
Things to pack:
- An extra neck warmer
- A helmet cap
- Waterproof shell layer
- Tools
- Headlamp/flashlight
- A spare base layer
- Snacks
- Plenty of water
- A first aid kit
Biking Gloves
While most standard mountain biking gloves are all about ventilation, you’ll want gloves that offer warmth, wind protection, and water resistance when you are out on the trails this fall.
Accessories
No fall mountain bike kit is complete with high-quality accessories. Round out your fall mountain biking arsenal with a beanie, sunglasses, a helmet, and a muff/neck warmer for those chilly high altitudes.

Things to Keep in Mind in the Fall
When planning your mountain bike trip this fall, consider the route, weather conditions, and your abilities. Try to be back before dark to avoid dangerous conditions and drops in temperature. In any case, make sure you have a headlamp or flashlight in your pack, just in case.
Most trails will be almost deserted, especially as it gets colder outside. But it is a good idea to be careful when there could be people on the trail. Give way to pedestrians and always call out a greeting!
