The best spots for beginners:
San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente
One of California’s most visited state parks, a portion of its beach is dedicated to surfers. This is the perfect spot for beginners with gentle waves maxing out at about 3-4 ft.

Sunset Beach in Pacific Palisades
The waves are mellow and the vibe is friendly and laid-back, making this a great spot for beginners to hone their skills.
El Porto, El Segundo
This is a great peak for beginners most of the year, but keep in mind that during the winter months, the waves will be more medium-sized.

The Wedge, on Newport Beach
Come in the summer or fall for enormous waves topping 30 feet!
Zuma Beach, Malibu
Recommended for intermediate or advanced surfers, you’ll find fast, consistent waves.

Huntington Beach
Also known as Surf City USA, Huntington Beach is home to the Annual World Surfing Championships and is always busy with plenty of waves to enjoy. From small swells for beginners, to waves upwards of 12 feet for those more experienced surfers, it’s an iconic, must-visit spot no matter your skill level.
