For snow lovers who love skiing long leisurely trails rather than flying down steep mountains, cross-country skiing is a favorite winter pastime.
Not only is cross-country skiing a great way to burn some calories during the winter, but it allows you to take in beautiful surroundings and admire stunning forests, mountains, and valleys, all blanketed in sparkling snow.
Here are some of our favorite cross-country skiing destinations around the United States!
Snowmass: Aspen, CO
Aspen’s Snowmass is one of the largest cross-country skiing trails in North America, with over 60 miles of groomed cross-country skiing trails. (P.S. it’s free!) The trail connects the ski villages of Aspen, Basalt, and Snowmass, which provide great places to stop for a cup of hot cocoa or a bite to eat along the way.
A wide variety of trails offer different terrains that beginners to more advanced cross-country skiers will enjoy. You can even scale Mt. Daly for some amazing views!
Telluride Ski Resort: Telluride, CO
The acclaimed cross-country ski trails at Telluride Ski Resort’s Snowshoe and Nordic Area take skiers through quiet snow-covered evergreens and rolling meadows and offer an amazing view of Prospect Bowl, Palmyra Peak, and the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
For more advanced skiers, the winding National Forest trails that lead to Alta Lakes can be found just off-site!
The Summit at Snoqualmie: Snoqualmie Pass, Washington
If you trek about an hour outside of Seattle, you’ll find the Summit at Snoqualmie, which offers 30 miles of groomed cross-country skiing trails through varied terrain. Four sections of the mountain offer different challenges and rewarding sights for those inclined to get a little more physical.
A favorite trail among cross-country skiers is the Hidden Valley Trail that traverses through the open valley between Mt. Hyak and Mt. Catherine.
Tip: After a day of cross-country skiing, let gravity do the rest and take a giant inner tube down the tubing hill for a thrilling end to the day.
Lone Mountain Ranch: Big Sky, Montana
During the winter, Yellowstone National Park’s stunning near-constant snowfalls bring cross-country skiers to Lone Mountain Ranch’s 50-mile trail system. Most notable for its pristine trails, this southwest Montana ski resort uses state-of-the-art equipment to maintain its cross-country paths through the Rocky Mountains.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort: Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole offers vast recreational cross-country skiing trails for those who are seeking the serene majesty of the Grand Teton Mountains. Start in Jackson Hole, where 10 miles of well-maintained trails wind throughout the countryside. Then try the Shooting Star Nordic Track on the mountainside for a sloping path of around 9 miles that will take you through varying terrains.
Keep an eye out for moose, deer coyotes, and bald eagles!
Whiteface: Lake Placid, New York
Lake Placid’s Whiteface Mountain was home to the 1980 winter Olympics and offers world-class cross-country skiing trails that extend 30 miles throughout the Adirondacks. As you traverse the trail, explore the beauty of the lake, witness the towering Mt. Ban Hoevenberg, and take a moment to notice the hush of the dense white pines of the surrounding forest.
One thing you won’t want to miss is the opportunity to experience the U.S. team’s training course with either a group or private lesson!
Bolton Valley: Bolton Valley, Vermont
Winter in Vermont is highlighted by cross country skiing throughout the awe-inspiring views that the Bolton Valley’s 5,000 acres have to offer. With an impressive 60 miles of trail, 9 of which are groomed, you’ll ski through a scenic loop around a beautiful freshwater pond.
